Naarden is a star fort in the Netherlands. The city was constructed in the manner seen here so that an attack on any individual wall could be defended from the two adjacent star points by shooting at the enemy from behind. Last week I visited this ordinary-looking car park in Cape Town’s Langa district to see the community project Up For All. With a high drop out rate among students in Langa, one local entrepreneur decided to open a coding academy in this car park, welcoming hundreds of students in the year since opening. Half have already graduated, and 21 have found work. If you code, you can! You can find out more here.

Surrounded by mountains to three sides and the Atlantic Ocean to the other, Cape Town’s Hout Bay is a near-yet-far type of suburb. And there’s a great German-style craft brewery if the views get boring.

The tram remains my favourite way of getting around the city by public transport. But perhaps the 19th century version is not quite so comfortable as the 21st century alternatives.
